As the Florida Panthers begin their 34th season of hockey, Jacob Markström returns to the crease, which he previously patrolled from 2011 to 2014, making him one of 41 goalies to ever skate with the franchise. Meanwhile, his partner Akira Schmid is about to become the 42nd goalie ever to pull on a Panthers sweater.
Historically, only 34 goalies have helped Florida win a game, with former puckstopper Daniil Tarasov the latest to join the list. When diving through the team’s record book, fans will see that only five goalies have won more than 50 games, four have 100 victories, while only two Hall of Fame-caliber netminders have won more than 200.
Usually, the success of a goalie relates to how many wins they have, like Martin Brodeur, Marc-Andre Fleury, and Patrick Roy, to name a few. Most of those legendary names won more than 40 games in a season, during an era when a starter played 60-70 games annually. Today, workloads are managed, and if a goalie wins more than 30 games, they are usually in contention for the Vezina Trophy.
When sorting Panthers’ goalies based on their yearly win totals, two names stand out above the rest. Yet, when we look at goalies who won 20 games or more, there is plenty to talk about. Here’s a look at the most successful regular-season goalies in Florida history.
Panthers goalies with the most 20-win seasons
Ed Belfour (1)
2006-07
At 41, Hall of Famer and Stanley Cup champion Ed Belfour played his final NHL season in Florida in 2006-07. In 58 games, he earned a 27-17-10 record, becoming only the fourth goalie to ever win more than 20 games in a season for the Panthers. Unfortunately, the club didn’t qualify for the playoffs that year, with Belfour retiring at year’s end. During his 17-year career, he won at least 20 games in all but two seasons.
James Reimer (1)
2017-18
James Reimer has been in the NHL for 16 seasons, including three with the Panthers from 2016 to 2019. In his second campaign, 2017-18, he played a career-high 44 games and posted a 22-14-6 record. With 53 career wins in Florida, he is the franchise’s fifth-winningest goalie. Despite playing on eight different teams, including two Original Six franchises, Reimer only won 20 games on one other occasion, in 2010-11 with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Jose Theodore (1)
2011-12
A decade after winning the Hart Trophy as league MVP, Jose Theodore came to the Panthers for two seasons beginning in 2011-12. He helped the club reach the playoffs for the first time since 2000. In 53 games, he had a 22-16-11 record, giving the Panthers five consecutive seasons with a goalie winning at least 20 contests. After 15 games in 2012-13, Theodore never played again in the NHL after battling injuries. He compiled eight seasons with 20 or more victories.
Sean Burke (1)
1998-99
Sean Burke played 18 seasons in the NHL with eight clubs, including a brief 65-game stint with the Panthers from 1998 to 1999. During his only full campaign in Florida, 1998-99, he played in 59 games, producing a 21-24-14 record. At the time, Burke was only the second goalie to ever win 20 games in a single season with the franchise. Overall, he had seven seasons with 20 or more wins.
John Vanbiesbrouck (3)
1993-94, 1995-96, 1996-97
United States Hockey Hall of Famer John Vanbiesbrouck was the team’s first star goalie, leading the Panthers to the 1996 Stanley Cup Final. When he left in 1998, he was the franchise’s win leader with 106 wins. During his five seasons in Florida, Vanbiesbrouck secured three 20-win seasons, the record for most 20-win seasons for almost two decades. Throughout his career, he produced 10 seasons with 20 or more wins.
Tomas Vokoun (4)
2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11
Tomas Vokoun was loved by Panthers fans and played 248 games over four seasons. During his time, he became the second goalie ever to win 30 games in a season, the second to win over 100 games, and, at the time, the only netminder to win at least 20 games in four consecutive seasons. As of 2026, Vokoun remains the franchise’s fourth-winningest goalie. During his 15-year career, he secured 20 or more wins on nine occasions.
Roberto Luongo (5)
2002-03, 2003-04, 2005-06, 2014-15, 2015-16
Hall of Famer Roberto Luongo became the first goalie to win 30 games in a single season, doing so in 2005-06. During his first stint with the Panthers, from 2001 to 2006, he earned a 108-154-41 record in 317 games, becoming only the second netminder to win more than 100 games. At 34, Luongo returned and played from 2013 until his retirement in 2019. In 2015-16, he set the franchise record for wins in a single season at 35, while adding two more 20-win campaigns to his resume. As of 2026, he remains the team’s all-time wins leader at 230. As the fourth-winningest goalie in NHL history, he produced 12 seasons with 20 or more wins.
Sergei Bobrovsky (6)
2019-20, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25, 2025-26
Future Hall of Famer Sergei Bobrovsky may not have caught Luongo for most wins in franchise history, but he remains the only goalie to lead the Panthers to the Stanley Cup. Moreover, he is the only goalie to compile six 20-win campaigns. In 2021-22, he set the franchise record with 39 wins, securing three 30-win seasons, another record. Outside of the 2020-21 campaign, when Bobrovsky was 19-8-2, he came ever so close to making it seven straight seasons of 20 wins. The two-time Vezina Trophy winner has recorded 20 or more wins 13 times.
Now, Markström has an opportunity to become the ninth goalie in Panthers history to win 20 games in a season. During his first stint in Florida, he won just 11 games across four seasons, but he returns in 2026-27 as the club's No. 1 netminder. If he reaches the 20-win mark, he'll add his name to an exclusive list that includes some of the greatest goalies in franchise history.
