On September 2, 2008, the Florida Panthers completed a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs that brought veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe to the organization. The former 40th overall pick in the 1993 NHL Draft was approaching 1,000 games, with 918 when he first put on a Panthers sweater on October 10, 2008.
McCabe's path to the Florida captaincy
McCabe debuted with the New York Islanders on October 7, 1995, and didn't miss a single game over the first three seasons in the league, which included a trade to the Vancouver Canucks. He was part of a deal involving some big names, including Todd Bertuzzi and Trevor Linden switching coasts. His time in Canada was brief, as a June 1999 trade sent him to Chicago, where he played one season before moving to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent.
Under the bright lights of one of the world's largest hockey markets, McCabe thrived in Toronto, setting career highs in goals (19) and points (68) in 2005-06. He played seven seasons with the Original Six franchise, serving as an alternate captain from 2001 to 2008. He also helped the Maple Leafs reach the playoffs from 2001 to 2004, including an Eastern Conference Final appearance in 2002.
On September 2, 2008, McCabe became a member of the Panthers, instantly earning the team's captaincy. Toronto traded their 33-year-old defenseman along with a fourth-round draft pick in 2010 for Mike Van Ryn.
Eventually, Florida selected goalie Sam Brittain with their draft pick, and he never played in the NHL despite 43 AHL games. After going to Toronto, Van Ryn played only 27 games in 2008-09, following 257 games over four seasons with the Panthers. In retirement, he began coaching in the OHL before winning the Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2019.
McCabe's tenure with the Panthers
During McCabe's first season in Florida, he scored 15 goals and had 39 points, good enough for seventh in team scoring. A year later, he tallied another eight goals and 43 points, becoming the team's third-highest scorer. Despite finishing third and fifth in the Southeast Division, the Panthers missed the playoffs both seasons.
At 35, Florida traded its captain to the New York Rangers on February 26, 2011, in exchange for Tim Kennedy and a third-round pick in 2011, which became Logan Shaw. McCabe would play 19 regular-season games and another five in the playoffs before retiring at year's end.
Soon after, McCabe returned to the Panthers organization as a Development Coach in 2012-13, earning a promotion to Director of Player Development in 2013-14, before winning two Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025 as Director of Player Personnel.
