The Florida Panthers have had only nine captains in their history, with Aleksander Barkov as their youngest, longest-tenured, and most successful leader. As of 2026, he remains the only one to hoist the Stanley Cup in a Panthers sweater, putting him in a class all by himself in Florida dressing room leadership.

Obviously, Barkov would hold the top spot on any list involving Florida hockey history, so it won’t surprise anyone to see him take the top spot here. However, eight other players are vying for the second spot and a place in the top five. Today, we rank the best Panthers captain in franchise history.

Who are the greatest captains in Florida Panthers history?

Derek MacKenzie (2016-2018)

Derek MacKenzie became captain of the Panthers ahead of the 2016-17 season, leading a lineup that featured Jonathan Huberdeau, Aaron Ekblad, Roberto Luongo, Shawn Thornton, Thomas Vanek, Jussi Jokinen, Keith Yandle, and the legendary Jaromir Jagr.

MacKenzie, 36 at the time, stayed in the role for another season, continuing the club’s trend of having their “C” on an older veteran. Although he would play one more season before retiring, he handed the role over to Barkov, who became the team’s leader at 23 in 2018.

Willie Mitchell (2014-2016)

Willie Mitchell won the Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and 2014, signing as a free agent with Florida after his second championship. Immediately, the club sewed the “C” on his sweater, continuing the trend of defensemen being the leaders, following Bryan McCabe and Ed Jovanovski. When Mitchell retired at the end of the 2015-16 season, he was 38 and remains the oldest captain in Panthers history.

Bryan McCabe (2009-2011)

Most fans may remember Bryan McCabe for his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he spent seven seasons, but at 33, he came down to Florida and brought his veteran leadership to the team. For the first time in franchise history, the Panthers named a defenseman as captain, ending a run of elite forwards as leaders. In 2011, McCabe became the third Florida captain traded during his tenure, following Pavel Bure and Scott Mellanby.

Brian Skrudland (1993-1997)

Brian Skrudland was the first captain in Panthers history and earned the role in part because he was a Stanley Cup champion with Montreal in 1986. By the time he came to Florida, via the Expansion Draft, he was approaching 500 NHL games. When the Panthers advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 1996, Skrudland became the first captain to receive the Prince of Wales Trophy as Eastern Conference champions.

Ed Jovanovski (2012-2014)

Ed Jovanovski gets a spot in the top five among captains in Panthers’ history because of his legacy. As the club’s first-ever first overall pick, he played parts of seven seasons in Florida, earning the captaincy during his second stint from 2011-14.

By this time, Jovanovski was a 15-year veteran, holding leadership roles with the Vancouver Canucks and Arizona Coyotes. More than a decade after his retirement, he still ranks among the top 15 in most statistical categories for defensemen in franchise history.

Pavel Bure (2001-02)

Bure is the only member of this list, as of 2026, to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Regarded as one of the best goal scorers of the 1990s, Bure served as the Panthers’ captain for only one season in 2001-02. He ascended to the role after setting the franchise record with 59 goals, breaking the mark he set the previous year, 1999-00, with 58.

When Bure left in a trade to the New York Rangers, he was Florida’s second-all-time leading goal scorer with 152 goals and still holds the seventh spot overall. Despite his successes, Bure played only four playoff games with the Panthers.

Olli Jokinen (2003-2008)

Before Barkov came along and rewrote the Panthers’ record book, Olli Jokinen was among the most offensively gifted skaters in team history. Although many players have collected more than 90 and 100 points in a single season, Jokinen was just the second player to achieve the feat, behind Bure in 2007.

Jokinen bounced around and skated with many teams throughout his 17-year NHL career, but many fans remember him and his seven-season tenure with the Panthers. At the time of his ascension to the captaincy in 2003, he was only the fourth leader in team history.

Scott Mellanby (1997-2001)

There will be some debate over whether Mellanby is the second-greatest captain in Panthers history. Ultimately, he earns this spot not for his offensive production during his turn as leader, but for the legacy he created in South Florida. Of course, we are talking about The Rat Trick and the team’s obsession with throwing plastic rats.

As the Panthers’ second-ever captain, Mellanby served in the role for three and a half seasons before a trade to the St. Louis Blues in March 2001. Despite being one of the first players to score 30 goals in a single season, his legacy remains one of the franchise’s most definitive moments.

Aleksander Barkov (2018-Present)

As mentioned, Jokinen was the youngest captain in team history, wearing the “C” for the first time at 25- that was until the Panthers gave Barkov the role in 2018-19 at 23. That season, he erupted for a career-high 96 points, the only time he has surpassed 90 points in his Hall of Fame-worthy career.

Barkov was the second overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, and after 12 seasons with the Panthers, he's tied for the franchise lead in games played and leads the pack in goals, assists, and points, making him arguably the greatest player in team history. Interestingly, he just turned 30, which means that when he retires, his totals will take a decade or more to catch up to. Whether on or off the ice, Barkov's legacy is once-in-a-generation.
