After months of rumors and speculation, it’s official: Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck has made his trade request public, which sparked so many reactions on social media. Early this offseason, the Florida Panthers let former goalie Sergei Bobrovsky walk in free agency and traded for Jacob Markström; they appeared to be in the mix to acquire the gold medal-winning netminder from Michigan. Of course, the fit would have been natural, since Hellebuyck would have been reteaming with Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, as the three just won medals at the recent Olympic Games. Today, the Panthers have their goalie tandem locked up with Markström and Akira Schmid, but taking a swing on Hellebuyck, a generational netminder, would be worth it to shake up the roster, right?
Hellebuyck is a former Vezina and Hart Trophy winner
In 2026, there are really only two goalies who stand above and beyond the rest of this generation’s crop, and that’s Hellebuyck and Andrei Vasilevskiy. Although the latter has won multiple Stanley Cup titles and a Conn Smythe Trophy, there’s no denying that Hellebuyck is one of, if not the best, regular-season goalie in the NHL today. Realistically, all he’s missing is a Stanley Cup ring to cement himself as one of the game’s all-time greatest, and that’s a goal very achievable in Florida.
Of course, if Hellebuyck came to the Panthers, fans of the 31 other teams would cry foul and claim the franchise is the NHL's New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. Remember, the two sides were linked in the days leading up to the draft in June, and despite pivoting and going in a different direction, Bill Zito is no stranger to shocking the hockey world and pulling off a blockbuster: see the Brad Marchand or Brady Tkachuk trades.
Hellebuyck is a significant upgrade over Markström
To acquire Hellebuyck, the Panthers would have to part ways with Markström, whom they just acquired a few months ago. In hindsight, making the move would be one of the wisest decisions of Zito’s career, since Markström is on the back end of his career and has never carried a team to the Stanley Cup Final, let alone the third round of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Hellebuyck is the best American-born goalie in professional hockey today and a proven winner who is at his peak right now.
Swapping goalies, especially after the new one hasn’t even put on a Panthers practice jersey, is a cruel move. But to win a few more Stanley Cups with Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, and Brad Marchand, acquiring Hellebuyck is a necessity at this point.
Unfortunately for the Jets, they are now the biggest losers in this situation. Since Hellebuyck went public with his grievances, the small-market Canadian club has lost most, if not all, of its leverage to keep its superstar netminder in the fold. Instead of asking for a King’s ransom, the Jets may have to settle for the best low-ball offer sent their way, since Hellebuyck has made it public that he’s not playing in Winnipeg anymore.
A little while ago, the Panthers would have needed to offer mortgage payments on Amarant Bank Arena to reunite Hellebuyck and the Tkachuks. Still, now it might be more manageable to orchestrate the heist of the century.
