Making it into an NHL game is every player’s dream; scoring a goal in the best league in the world is pretty special. Some legendary players have done it hundreds of times, while those fortunate enough to get a call-up do it once or twice. What’s even more special than scoring a goal is winning the game for your teammates in overtime. Today, we look at the NHL’s active career overtime goal leaders, including one veteran from the Florida Panthers.
Top 10 Active NHL Players With the Most Overtime Goals
Connor McDavid (17)
There’s an argument that Connor McDavid is not only the best player in the world today, but the greatest of all time. Although he’s still missing a Stanley Cup ring on his resume, he’s quickly climbed the all-time scoring charts and now has 17 overtime goals, which rank 10th among active skaters and 12th all-time. McDavid’s only overtime winner against Florida came on January 18, 2017.
J.T. Miller (17)
Through 14 seasons, New York Rangers captain J.T. Miller has been a clutch player, with 17 career overtime goals. As he approaches 1,000 NHL games this season, he’s collected 55 game-winning goals and, at just 33, could find his way to 20 overtime winners before retiring. He also has one extra-period goal against Florida, coming on October 17, 2024.
Steven Stamkos (17)
Former long-time captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Steven Stamkos, needs no introduction to the Panthers fanbase. For 16 years, he was a thorn in the club’s side, racking up over 500 goals and two Stanley Cup championships. He enters the 2026-27 season with 17 overtime winners, including two against Florida on November 25, 2011, and December 4, 2025.
Sebastian Aho (18)
Carolina Hurricanes star Sebastian Aho has collected 18 overtime goals in just 756 regular-season games, which is the fewest games by any player on the list. Moreover, he ranks seventh in overtime goals, while ranking 13th overall with 68 career game-winners among active skaters. Aho’s only overtime winner against Florida came on March 2, 2019.
Mark Scheifele (18)
As the offensive star of the Winnipeg Jets, the club relies on Mark Scheifele night in and night out to win hockey games. As he approaches 1,000 games this season, he’ll look to add another overtime winner or two to his resume. His only overtime goal against Florida came on March 11, 2023.
Leon Draisaitl (20)
The Edmonton Oilers have had legendary scorers in their lineup, including Leon Draisaitl, who is one of 12 active players with more than 1,000 NHL points. He ranks fifth among his peers with 20 overtime winners, including one against Florida on November 28, 2022.
John Tavares (20)
As one of the more veteran players on the list, John Tavares has tallied 20 overtime winners over his 17 years in the NHL. Between New York (Islanders) and Toronto, he’s tallied over 500 goals and 1,100 points. His lone overtime goal against Florida came on April 10, 2023.
Brad Marchand (22)
It is no surprise to see someone of Brad Marchand’s caliber be among the all-time leaders in overtime goals. Whether it’s scoring clutch goals in the regular season or playoffs, he’s built a resume worthy of the Hall of Fame. With 22 overtime winners, Marchand’s total ranks third all-time. As a long-time skater with the Boston Bruins, he scored one overtime winner against Florida on November 4, 2014.
Sidney Crosby (25)
As one of the greatest to ever play professional hockey, Sidney Crosby ranks second all-time with 25 overtime goals. Although these totals include only NHL regular-season games, he scored arguably the greatest overtime goal in Olympic history in 2010. The longest-serving captain in Pittsburgh Penguins history has only one overtime goal against Florida, back on November 23, 2009.
Alex Ovechkin (27)
There are not many NHL goal-scoring records that Alex Ovechkin doesn’t own. Besides the career goal record, 929 and counting, he also owns the power-play (331), overtime (27), and game-winning (141) goal records. Despite all his successes against the Panthers, leading all players with 92 points, Ovechkin has never scored an overtime goal against the franchise.
