Many days define a franchise’s history, and for the Florida Panthers, that day was July 22, 2022, when the club acquired Matthew Tkachuk from the Calgary Flames. During his first three seasons in South Florida, he recorded a career-high 109 points, lost in the Stanley Cup Final in 2023, before hoisting the Silver Chalice a year later in 2024 and again in 2025. In June 2026, Tkachuk got a chance to play with his brother Brady for the first time in their professional careers when the Panthers acquired him.
Four years later, it is safe to say that the fortunes of the Panthers dramatically changed the day Tkachuk joined the ranks. For those who don’t remember, Florida acquired him, along with a 2025 fourth-round pick, in exchange for 115-point player Jonathan Huberdeau, defenseman MacKenzie Weegar, prospect Cole Schwindt, and a 2025 first-round pick.
Today, only Tkachuk and Huberdeau still play for the Panthers and Flames, respectively. At the same time, Schwindt recently returned to Florida last season, finally getting a chance to prove why the organization drafted him in the third round.
Where are they now? Revisiting the Tkachuk and Huberdeau trade
As mentioned earlier, Tkachuk has found the most success since swapping jerseys, winning two Stanley Cup titles and a Gold Medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics with Team USA. Moreover, he played in the 2023 NHL All-Star Game and earned post-season All-Star Team honors. During his last season with the Flames, he set career highs with 42 goals and 104 points, continuing that success in his first year in Florida with 40 goals and 109 points. Since then, injuries have slowed his production, but in 67 playoff games with the Panthers, Tkachuk already has 69 points.
Meanwhile, Florida selected Mads Kongsbak Klyvo at 112th overall with their fourth-round pick acquired in the deal. Thus far, the 19-year-old from Frederikshavn, Denmark has yet to play in North America. Since his draft year, he’s played in the Swedish J20 Nationell league and skated just two games in the SHL last year. Internationally, Klyvo has represented Denmark at the U20 World Juniors.
In Calgary, Huberdeau struggled out of the gate with his new team, scoring just 55 points in 2022-23 after a Panthers record of 115 the year before. At least he put up respectable numbers in 2024-25, scoring 28 goals and 62 points. However, in four seasons, he has only 194 points and is minus-49.
Defenseman Weegar played only four seasons with the Flames, putting up a career-best 20 goals and 52 points in 2023-24. In 304 games, he tallied 35 goals and 151 points and was a career-worst minus-35 last season before a trade to the Utah Mammoth in March 2026.
After just three games with the Panthers, Schwindt found his way to Calgary, where he played only four games during the 2023-24 season. It wasn't until he found a regular role with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2024-25 that he finally scored his first NHL goal. However, as a free agent in the summer of 2026, he returned to the Panthers and had five goals and seven points in 29 games.
Finally, since Florida won the Stanley Cup in 2025, they held the last pick in the first round of the 2025 draft, which went to the Flames to complete the deal. They selected Cullen Potter 32nd overall, who is still playing in the NCAA, now with Michigan State University after two years at Arizona State University.
Considering there are two Stanley Cup banners at Amerant Bank Arena, with the help of Tkachuk, fans hope that, as one of the core members of the organization, he’ll form an incredible duo with his brother and raise one or more Stanley Cups before their time is up. As it says in the beginning, the day he came to Florida, the organization changed forever.
