Panthers' surprising record after offensive outburst spells trouble for Canucks

The Florida Panthers have a remarkable record following seven-goal performances under Paul Maurice, a trend that could spell trouble for the Vancouver Canucks.

On Tuesday night, the Florida Panthers scored a season-high seven goals, the 14th time the club has done so under current head coach Paul Maurice. In 2022-23, the Cats scored seven or more in five games; in 2023-24 and 2024-25, they did so twice; and last year, they did so four times. So far, the Panthers have scored a record nine goals in a single game twice in the past four seasons: against the Montreal Canadiens on Mar. 16, 2023, and against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Feb. 17, 2024.

Usually, teams that have a great offensive game and blow out an opponent tend to have a quiet contest the next time they take the ice. In the 12 games following those offensive outbursts, Florida has compiled an impressive 9-3-0 record. However, including this season's opening victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, which followed an eight-goal performance in last year's season finale, that record improves to 10-3-0.

Panthers have a golden opportunity to continue their scoring trend

On Thursday night, the Cats welcome the Vancouver Canucks to Amerant Bank Arena. Entering the tilt, the Canucks, who posted the worst record in the league last year, are 2-6-0 in eight games. They’ve scored 26 goals and given up 38, the most goals against in the NHL in 2026-27. However, their goal differential is only minus 12, the third-worst total.

In 2025-26, the Panthers defeated the Canucks on November 17 with an 8-5 win, one of three games in which Florida scored eight goals, a season high. Immediately after the Vancouver win, Florida shut out the New Jersey Devils 1-0, its only shutout after a blowout win under Maurice.

With the Canucks scoring more goals than last year, the Panthers aren't guaranteed another shutout. However, in games following seven-goal performances with Maurice behind the bench, Florida has allowed just 1.76 goals per game while scoring 2.61.

Tkachuk brothers make history in Panthers' offensive explosion

Brady Tkachuk had a natural hat trick in the second period of Tuesday’s clash with the Columbus Blue Jackets, his second natural hat trick in nine seasons. His three-goal game was his fourth, with the previous three coming on Dec. 11, 2021, Feb. 13, 2024, and Mar. 16, 2024. So, how has Brady performed in the next game after scoring a hat trick?

Interestingly, after scoring his first hat trick against the Lightning, Tkachuk had a single assist in his next game, against the Panthers on Dec. 14, 2021. After his second, he was held scoreless in a 5-1 defeat to the Anaheim Ducks on Feb. 15, 2024, and got an assist against the Hurricanes on Mar. 17, 2024. Overall, Tkachuk has followed up those performances with just two points, both assists, so what can Florida fans expect on Thursday?

Speaking of success, his brother Matthew just recorded his third five-point night with the Panthers, breaking a tie with captain Aleksander Barkov for second most in franchise history. Heading into Thursday, Tkachuk is still two five-point games shy of Jonathan Huberdeau, who set the record with five games from 2020 to 2022. After their memorable performances in Columbus, the Tkachuk brothers will have another opportunity to make history when the Panthers host the struggling Canucks on Thursday.
