The Florida Panthers continued their season-opening road trip, visiting the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night and losing 4-3 in overtime. After falling behind 3-0, the Cats rallied to tie in the third period and had multiple chances in the final minutes, including a couple in overtime. However, one of Thursday night's biggest storylines is the health of Cats captain Aleksander Barkov. During a battle in the corner in the second period, Barkov appeared to suffer a lower-body injury.
Barkov missed the entirety of the 2025-26 campaign
Of course, Panthers fans do not need a reminder that Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season after suffering a torn ACL and MCL in the first practice. Without their fearless leader, the club tumbled down the Atlantic Division standings, finishing seventh, slightly ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The lost season halted Florida’s six-year playoff streak, which included three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances.

Through hard work, Barkov returned to professional hockey in the spring, helping Finland win the World Championship alongside teammate Anton Lundell. Everything seemed to be trending in the right direction for the franchise’s leading scorer, who had four points in two preseason contests. On Opening Night, he skated 20:32 on 26 shifts, second among forwards, behind Sam Reinhart, who skated 20:57. Despite being held without a point in the 1-0 win, he had one shot on goal.
On Thursday night, Barkov left the contest after 12 shifts and just 9:15 of ice time.
An unwelcome case of déjà vu
Once Barkov went down, the Panthers were forced to begin their title defense without their captain. They won their first three games before the wheels slowly started to fall off. The club was 4-6-1 after October, and then more injuries hit. Whether it was Matthew Tkachuk, Brad Marchand, or Dmitry Kulikov, the Panthers lost more than 500 man-games to injury by the end of the campaign. Meanwhile, the reinforcements couldn’t right the ship or even keep it afloat. Eventually, everything caught up to goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who had his worst statistical season in Florida.
However, this season’s club has a silver lining. After three lengthy, grueling playoff runs, the Panthers had an extra-long summer to rest and heal. Aside from Marchand missing some time due to late-summer surgery and Gustav Forsling being day-to-day, the team is completely healthy. Moreover, they added veteran grit to the lineup with Radko Gudas and Garnet Hathaway. Brady Tkachuk is also in town and ready to score goals and fight everyone.
None of this can replace Barkov, his leadership, or his presence on the ice. But unlike last season, when the Panthers were ill-equipped to overcome the loss of their captain, this year's roster appears better prepared to withstand it. If Barkov misses significant time, Florida has the depth, experience, and reinforcements to pick up the mantle and make sure the Panthers are playing hockey in the spring.
