The Panthers are only three games into the season, and they already have plenty to figure out: three straight overtime games, a home opener approaching, and now weeks without Sasha Barkov. Tuesday’s injury update finally brought some answers and more waiting.
Three games, three overtimes
Florida faces the Los Angeles Kings today, Tuesday, before returning home to play the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, Oct. 10.
The Panthers started the season on the road with three overtimes in three games: a 1-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes and two losses - 4-3 against the San Jose Sharks and 3-2 against the Anaheim Ducks. Markstrom already has two contests under his blocker. Regardless of the outcomes, collecting points is important. Losing Aleksander Barkov to another injury doesn't help, but, like it or not, the Panthers will have to figure it out.
Maurice pushes back on reports
By noon Monday, reports about Barkov’s recovery schedule were circulating online, and the news quickly went viral. Among those sharing it was Armando Velez, who posted on X: “Just been told that Aleksander Barkov’s injury will sideline him in the range of 10-12 weeks.”

That timeline would have him returning around Christmas/New Years.#FLAPanthers
After morning practice, Paul Maurice, a straightforward man, shared his thoughts:
“Do not bet your hard-earned money on that one,” Maurice said. “If I don’t know, nobody else does.”
At that point, all we could do was join A.J. Greer in wishing Aleksander Barkov the best and hoping for good news.
A six-to-eight-week window
On Tuesday, the team finally provided a public update: Barkov will rehab his lower-body injury without surgery and attempt to return within six to eight weeks.
That gives us a timeline, but the key word is “attempt.” The captain’s return will depend on how his recovery goes.
Counting from today, Oct. 6, that window looks like this:
- Six weeks: Tuesday, Nov. 17
- Seven weeks: Tuesday, Nov. 24
- Eight weeks: Tuesday, Dec. 1
Even the earliest date means a substantial stretch without Barkov. The Panthers could be looking at least 20 games without their captain, with a longer absence possible if his recovery takes more time. The stakes are already higher than they originally appeared when he was placed on LTIR.
Still, a look at the Panthers’ record offers a surprising perspective on how they have handled Barkov's absence in the past.
For now, there is nothing else to do but wait and cheer for the Panthers.
