As Bill Zito prepares to celebrate his 62nd birthday on Sept. 16, the Florida Panthers’ president of hockey operations and general manager has another milestone to add to an already remarkable resume.
Broward County officially declared Sept. 10, 2026, as “Bill Zito Day,” recognizing the executive whose leadership helped transform the Panthers into back-to-back Stanley Cup champions and one of the NHL’s most successful franchises.
A surprise at the County Commission meeting
According to the Florida Panthers website, Zito attended a regular Broward County Commission meeting last week, believing local leaders planned to discuss the beginning of another Panthers season. Instead, he discovered that he was the guest of honor and was presented with a key to the county.
The key may not unlock any physical doors, but symbolic gestures traditionally represent one of the highest public honors a local government can grant. In Zito’s case, it recognizes achievements that go beyond the Panthers’ success on the ice.
Hockey experience
Zito’s path to an NHL front office did not begin in a boardroom.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he played hockey at University School of Milwaukee and Phillips Academy Andover before joining Yale University’s NCAA Division I program. He appeared in 37 games during three seasons with the Bulldogs from 1984 to 1987. He graduated with with a bachelor’s degree in history. Then, his Elite Prospects profile lists two seasons with SalPa in Finland’s third division. That playing background is an important part of his story. Zito did not enter professional hockey as a lawyer or business executive; he gained on-ice experience before building a career in management.
From law school to hockey management
After earning his law degree at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Law School in 1993, he practiced at major firms in New York and Chicago. Soon after, he founded Acme World Sports in 1995.
But that wasn't enough. Zito moved from player representation into NHL management in 2013 when he joined the Columbus Blue Jackets franchise. During seven seasons with the organization, he held several positions, including assistant general manager, associate general manager, vice president of hockey operations. He spent his time between the NHL and AHL. He managed the organization’s American Hockey League affiliate, then known as the Lake Erie Monsters and later the Cleveland Monsters. The club became the Calder Cup champion in 2016.
Building a winner in South Florida
The Florida Panthers hired the Pittsburgh native as general manager on Sept. 2, 2020.
Under his leadership, the Panthers reached three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals and captured back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025. As the result of his early success, the organization promoted Zito to president of hockey operations and general manager in April 2024.
Furthermore, Zito built the roster through aggressive trades, targeted signings, and careful talent evaluation. The Cats fan base has learned to trust his moves, even when they seem risky. His management style helped turn the Panthers into a consistent contender while establishing a distinct team identity on and off-the ice. His success also earned recognition across the NHL. Zito became a four-time finalist for the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.

International success with Team USA

He served on the management staff of the U.S. team that earned bronze at the 2015 IIHF Men’s World Championship. Three years later, he became general manager of another bronze-medal-winning American team at the 2018 World Championship in Denmark. Zito later worked as an assistant general manager at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off and held the same role for the U.S. men’s team that won Olympics in 2026. Now, his impressive list of accomplishments includes two Stanley Cups, one Calder Cup, and the Olympic gold. What else could Bill Zito dream of?
Florida Panthers expand their South Florida presence
The Panthers’ rise has gone beyond wins and championships.
The organization hosted the NHL All-Star Game in 2023 and participated in Florida’s first NHL outdoor game, facing the New York Rangers in the 2026 Winter Classic at loanDepot park in Miami.
In 2025, the Panthers were named “Sports Team of the Year” at the 18th annual Sports Business Journal Sports Business Awards, adding national business recognition to the organization’s success.
The team’s championship runs have produced visible economic benefits for Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding area. For example, ahead of the 2025 parade along State Road A1A, local hotels and restaurants reported full bookings days before the event.
Zito’s community involvement also includes service on the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale. Recently, the museum hosted a hockey exhibition, highlighting Panthers achievements. The list goes on. One thing is certain: under Zito's leadership, the club has strengthened its presence across the Sunshine State.
