On Ap. 9, 2026, Sergei Bobrovsky played his final game with the Florida Panthers, the same team he suited up for for seven seasons. His run included three Stanley Cup Final appearances and two championships in 2024 and 2025.

However, when NHL free agency opened on July 1, Bobrovsky relocated to Canada, agreeing to a three-year, $21 million deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Two days after his signing, on Friday, his new club introduced their star goalie to the media.

Interestingly, Bobrovsky revealed that, despite having no hard feelings towards the Panthers organization, including General Manager Bill Zito, he didn’t want to leave Florida.

Although everyone in the media is praising him for being so grateful for his time with the Panthers and the opportunity to keep playing as a number one goalie with the Maple Leafs, it is odd that he’d come out and say that he had hoped to retire in Florida.

Of course, none of us knows exactly what conversations he had with the Panthers’ executives, but according to the rumors, he wanted a lengthy extension and a lot of money per year. Considering the team had limited space under the cap to give Bobrovsky the pay he may have wanted, it appears there was still hope, at least until Florida brought back Jacob Markström on June 30th.

If Bobrovsky really wanted to stay in the Sunshine State, he could have tried to meet the team in the middle. However, the rumors indicated that he wasn’t budging from his requests, which the Maple Leafs seemingly agreed to.

Ultimately, he used his introductory press conference to clear the air and provide fans with an insight into what brought his legendary tenure in Florida to an end, without saying it was his own undoing, with possible unrealistic contract demands that brought that chapter of his career to an end.

Aside from the talk about the breakup with the Panthers and how happy he is to play for an Original Six franchise for the first time, another important conversation took place: would he get to wear No. 72 with the Maple Leafs?

One week ago, Toronto drafted Gavin McKenna as the top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. As the best prospect in his class, McKenna is going to jump from the NCAA to the NHL this autumn and won’t be wearing his usual No. 72 jersey, since Bobrovsky said he gave it up to him.

As a future Hall of Famer, there’s an argument to be made that he’s earned the chance to wear the number that has defined his career. However, on the other hand, McKenna is going to be the face of the franchise sooner rather than later, especially if captain Auston Matthews departs when he’s a free agent in two seasons.

Interestingly, the move has divided social media, as many feel the number should belong to McKenna, since he has a chance to be in Toronto much longer than Bobrovsky does. Many pointed out that he could get the number when the goalie possibly retires in three years, or could carve out his own legacy in a different sweater. Either way, the topic has rubbed some people the wrong way.
