One trophy and 16 teams are in the center of attention in Switzerland, as the 2026 IIHF Men’s World Championship continues through May 31. From Sunrise to the world stage, the Florida Panthers are represented by five players in the premier international tournament outside the Olympics.
Finland
Only two Finnish forwards represent the Florida Panthers in Switzerland: the 30-year-old Aleksander Barkov and the 24-year-old Anton Lundell.
After two games, Team Finland is placed second in Group A with two wins and six points. Barkov has yet to score a goal but has already registered three assists and a +1 in the plus/minus rating. Sasha Barkov missed the entire 2025-2026 season due to a preseason injury, which also kept him out of the NHL Winter Classic in Miami and the Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games. Now, the World Championship serves as his return to high-level competition - and an opportunity to begin his comeback.
The three-time Selke Trophy winner previously won a silver medal during the 2016 Men’s Worlds.
Another Panther, Anton Lundell, has already collected one goal and one assist. By 24, he has a bronze Olympic medal (2026), a silver medal from the 2021 Men’s Worlds, and a few gold medals from the IIHF Junior Championships. In Barkov’s absence, Lundell also stepped up on the Panthers’ roster, registering 18 goals and 44 points in the recent regular season.
Beyond Finland’s star power, Florida’s younger international talent is also making its presence felt.
Latvia
After making his NHL debut on Jan. 10, 2026, Sandis Vilmanis represented his native Latvia at the 2026 Winter Olympics. He appeared in 19 NHL games and scored three goals and five points. The 22-year-old forward participated in three World Junior Championships.
Czechia
The Panthers’ European footprint extends even further with another young player making an early impression. The 22-year-old defenseman, Marek Alscher, made his NHL debut on April 9. He registered three assists in four contests.
USA
Across the Atlantic, Florida’s presence is just as significant, with one of the franchise’s biggest stars chasing history. While Matthew Tkachuk missed most of the 2025-26 season due to injury, he used his chance to represent Team USA in Milan, becoming an Olympic champion.
And Tkachuk never stops. The 28-year-old Panther is one step away from joining the Triple Golden Club. He has two Stanley Cups and an Olympic gold medal on his resume. Adding a world championship gold would make him the first U.S.-born player to join the prestigious club.
At this point, 11 Canadians, nine Swedes, seven Russians, two Czechs, and one Finn are part of the Triple Golden Club. On the coaching side, Mike Babcock, a former Team Canada head coach, is the only coach in that category.
Besides five players, the Florida Panthers are represented by four staff members for Team USA and one member for Team Canada.
What once seemed improbable in South Florida is now reality: the Panthers are no longer simply Stanley Cup contenders - they’re a franchise with influence stretching across the international game.
