They weren’t expected to do or be involved in much, but the Florida Panthers managed to remain productive, despite a quiet day.

Heading into the trade deadline, no one (including myself) imagined that the Florida Panthers were going to have a busy day. Instead, they were involved in a few minor deals, going about the day in a different kind of way.

The day started off with a two-sided trade with the Carolina Hurricanes. Starting with the first side, the Panthers acquired forward Cliff Pu in exchange for future considerations.

Pu, who’s 20-years-old and from Richmond Hill, Ontario, was originally drafted back in 2016 by the Buffalo Sabres (69th overall). Two seasons later, he was dealt to the Hurricanes as apart of the Jeff Skinner deal.

On the other side, the Hurricanes acquired forward Tomas Jurco (in exchange for future considerations), who was playing with the Panthers’ affiliate (Springfield) down in the minors.

About an hour later, the Cats shipped off forward Derick Brassard over to the Colorado Avalanche, obtaining a 2020 third-round draft pick in return.

Brassard was originally acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the BjugstadMcCann deal. Forward Riley Sheahan was another piece that headed Florida’s way.

Coincidentally, because the Avalanche were the Panthers’ opponents last night, Brassard suited up and played against his former team. And, funny enough, he scored!

It’s important to note that there’s one condition in this deal. If the Avs re-sign Brassard, the Panthers will not have to send over their 2020 sixth-round draft pick.

As the deadline hit and other deals started to break after the hour, the Panthers managed to squeeze in a couple more minor transactions.

First, former KHL defenseman Bogdan Kiselevich was dealt to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a 2021 seventh-round pick.

And second, defenseman Chris Wideman was shipped off to Pittsburgh in return for centerman Jean-Sebastien Dea.

Unfortunately, Kiselevich has been healthy scratched for the majority of the season and was expected to be shopped during the trade deadline.

On the other hand, center Jean-Sebastien Dea presents himself as a suitable option in the minors for Springfield, bringing a depth presence that is so desperately lacked on a thin offensive team.

Overall, the Florida Panthers had a fairly quiet day, which was predicted and expected by many on all fronts. However, they were able to part ways with some players that weren’t looked upon for the future, while at the same time, stocking up on some draft picks.
