To celebrate the Florida Panthers’ 25th anniversary of playing in the NHL, the club will be hosting ‘Legacy Saturdays’ throughout the 2018-19 season.

Some of you may wonder, “what is ‘Legacy Saturdays’ and what is it all about?” For starters, Legacy Saturdays is a celebration to honor the important figures in Panthers history throughout its 25 years of existence.

Beginning on Saturday, October 13th against the Vancouver Canucks at 7pm, the Panthers will host a pre-game ceremony for goaltender Roberto Luongo, celebrating his accomplishment of appearing in 1,000 NHL games.

At 39 years of age, Luongo has featured in 529 games for the Cats, while playing in 448 and 24 for both the Vancouver Canucks and New York Islanders, respectively. Luongo reached the 1,000-game mark on April 5th, 2018, in a 3-2 victory against the Boston Bruins.

Beloved for his on-ice contributions by many across the hockey community, his work off the ice shouldn’t go unnoticed, either. After the terrible tragedy that took place in Parkland, Florida at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Roberto decided to stand up and recite a beautiful speech.

His famous words that touched so many hearts ranging from the victims to the people living in Parkland were, “It’s enough, enough is enough, we gotta take action.” Taking action is what Lu did, leading his Cats to a 3-2 triumph over the Washington Capitals.

His words that night inspired many (including myself), which only reiterated how much of a figure Roberto Luongo is across the entirety of the NHL.

Florida will also honor the life of original Panthers president William A. Torrey on November, 10th against the New York Islanders at 7pm. Mr. Torrey worked in the Panthers organization for 25 years (1993-2018). He was also responsible for the Islanders dynasty, guiding the club to four Stanley Cup victories.

Fellow Panthers alumni and fan favorites that will also take place in ‘Legacy Saturdays’ on Saturday home games include Radek Dvorak, Olli Jokinen, Ed Jovanovski, Bill Lindsay, Bryan McCabe, Ray Sheppard, Tomas Vokoun, and Stephen Weiss.

Florida’s VP of Alumni and Broadcasting Randy Moller had a few words to say about the new celebration series ‘Legacy Saturdays’:

“We’re proud to host representatives from our growing and engaged base of alumni as we celebrate an important anniversary season for the Panthers with the Legacy Saturdays series. These players and former players have made Florida their home and have shaped this franchise, and we’re honored that they’ve elected to represent Panthers history and our brand this upcoming season.”

In addition to Legacy Saturdays, single-game tickets for Florida Panthers home games will go on sale on August, 22nd at 10am. Tickets can either be purchased from Ticketmaster.com or at the BB&T’s box office during regular business hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-5am).
