Not a whole lot has happened for the Florida Panthers this offseason, but finally just finally a trade has come our way.

the Florida Panthers have announced that they have acquired forward Jamie McGinn in exchange for Jason Demers. The Cats will also retain 12.5% of Demers salary.

Dale Tallon and the Panthers see this trade as a way to dump salary and add another gritty forward to the lineup. Dale had a few words to say about the new addition (Jamie):

"“Jamie brings size, skill and grit to our lineup and makes us a tougher team to play against. He’s played in over 500 NHL games and possesses a strong game on both sides of the puck. Jamie will be a welcome addition to our club as we move forward through training camp and into the season.”"

The 29-year-old was originally drafted in 2006 by the San Jose Sharks (2nd round, 6th pick). The 6’1 forward, recorded 9G, 8A and 17 points in 72 games played with the Arizona Coyotes last season. Apart from Arizona and San Jose, McGinn has also been a member of the Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche and Anaheim Ducks.

His most memorable year would date back to the 2013-14 season with the Avalanche, where he tallied a record best 19G, 19A and 38 points in 79 games played that year. Jamie will likely slot into the 3rd line alongside Nick Bjugstad, with hope that he can provide some offense.

The Cats have also addressed another area that is of need of help, the wing position. The Panthers are currently thin on wingers and adding an experienced bottom six winger like Jamie himself, should only provide more depth.

This deal has shocked and will shock many on the basis of Jason Demers’ return, however, it’s worth noting that Dale was looking to dump some salary and give guys like McCoshen and Weegar a chance to make the team.
