Saturday will be a special night at the BB&T Center for the Panthers as the team will host the national LGBT sports group’s first You Can Play Equality Night. The goal of the event is to reach out to the gay community and provide a sense of welcoming in the hockey world both for gay fans and gay players.
The NHL has been one of the major American sports on the forefront of embracing the gay community. Last year, many of the league’s stars filmed commercials spreading the You Can Play message. Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell participated in one such commercial with fellow Florida star Steven Stamkos:
