Forbes published an interesting look at whether the NHL’s lottery system is flawed. I think the NHL is in a tough spot because if you were to do away with the lottery, teams would tank to secure the number one pick. At the same time, as the Forbes article points out, with the lottery in place teams could tank to improve their chances at receiving the number one pick.
I liked the NHL’s previous rule where a team could only move up four positions by winning the lottery so only the league’s five worst teams had a shot at winning the number one pick. The new rule in place this year that gives every non-playoff team a chance to win regardless of where they finished in the standings seems to be just a way to bring more attention to the lottery.
For a little fun, the Oilers posted a lottery simulator on their website. (It took me five tries before the Panthers won by the way)
