Florida Panthers Sign Jon Rheault. Who Is He?

It was a busy day in the world of hockey yesterday. Hockey players, families, and fans were frequently checking their phones and the internet to keep tabs on all that was happening. The Florida Panthers added George Parros, and Filip Kuba to their roster in addition to building organizational depth with the signings of some AHLers. Center Greg Rallo and goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris both signed one-year, two-way deals with the Panthers for the upcoming season. Also signing a two-way contract with the Panthers for next season was 5-foot-11 Right Winger Jon Rheault, who spent last season with the Abbotsford Heat in the AHL.

After playing for the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs in the EJHL, Rheault spent the next four years at Province University playing Division 1 NCAA Hockey. During his four years with the Friars, he netted over 50 goals and almost matched that number with assists. At the end of his first year, he received the Rev. Herman Schneider Award, naming him the team’s most valuable freshman. Jon also added the title of MVP to his resume when he received the Lou Lamoriello Award for his play during his 2nd and 3rd years at Province. During his final season with the Friars, he co-captained the team after being one of the junior assistant captains the previous season.

In 2008, Rheault began the season with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL before spending time with the Ontario Reign of the ECHL. The following season, the Philadelphia Flyers 5thround draft pick from 2006 split time with the Reign and Monarchs once again, in addition to appearing in games for the Province Bruins and Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League. He tallied a combined 6 goals and 5 assists during the 2009-10 regular season, and added another 6 goals and 2 assists for the Abbotsford Heat during the playoffs.  Jon has spent the past two seasons with the Heat and has picked up more than 30 points each season.

Rheault makes a nice addition to the Florida Panthers organization and gives them even more depth at Right Wing. He’ll fit quite nicely into the San Antonio Rampage line up and will most likely be one of their top six forwards when the puck drops in October.
