High School Hockey In South Florida

Yes it does exist!  Hockey here in the hotbed of the south is more popular than you can imagine.  Youth leagues, High School teams, and even adult teams can be found playing just as often as up north!

On Saturday evening, I attended a High School hockey game between the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders and the Park Vista Cobra’s.

St. Thomas known as a football powerhouse here in the Fort Lauderdale area, is pretty competitive in all their sports and hockey is no exception.  While this is only the second time I have seen them play, I get a real kick out of watching the youngsters play and it’s pretty cool to see some kids that you know, or know of who play and see how they’ve developed.

The Cobra’s who only had about nine players compared to the fifteen of St. Thomas were a chippy bunch this night and played hard and aggressively.  Maybe even a tad dirty.  St. Thomas was equally up to the task however and tied the game at two as the teams battled hard in the third period until a short handed goal by The Cobra’s gave them the lead with less than 5 minutes left.

St. Thomas gave a great effort to tie the game and had some scoring chances, but the Cobra’s were able to hold on for the win.

I’ve always liked watching high school sports.  It’s nice to see the passion and excitement that those athelte’s bring.

The next game for St. Thomas isn’t until February 11th cause of the holidays, so if you get a chance come out and watch!  This one will be at The Bank Atlantic Center.
