It wasn’t too long ago that there was some doubt whether or not Roberto Luongo was going to be ready for the start of the regular season, after undergoing offseason hip surgery.

The Florida Panthers had contingency plans in place should their netminder have to miss time, signing James Reimer in free agency and trading for backup goalie Reto Berra from the Colorado Avalanche.

But just two games in the season, Luongo has not only made his way back onto the ice but is back to his regular ways, enjoying a very successful opening weekend.

He won both of his starts, only allowing two goals combined as Florida has jumped out to a 2-0 start this season. He stopped 24-of-25 in their season opening overtime win against the New Jersey Devils before putting aside another 22 (of 23) in their second win against the Detroit Red Wings.

With his victory against the Red Wings, Luongo passed

As long as Luongo remains in good health this season, passing both Sawchuk and Joseph seem to be within grasp.

His achievements weren’t through however, as he was also recognized as the league’s third star of the week, behind Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews.

His overall numbers included a 2-0 record, with a .957 SV% and 0.98 GAA. Both of those numbers are the best in the league for any goalie that has appeared in multiple games, heading into Monday night’s games.

The Panthers will continue their quest to remain undefeated Tuesday night against instate rival, the Tampa Bay Lightning. While Luongo is looking good, and typically would want to ride the hot hand, at 37 years old and having a backup you signed to a five year deal, you would have to expect to see Reimer play soon.

How the workload will be handed out is yet to be seen, but if the Panthers want Luongo to remain fresh down the stretch run, an extra day off here or there this time of year will be crucial.
