According to Josh Rimer the Florida Panthers have invited 31 year old defenceman Shane O’Brien to training camp.
Rimer also managed to ask Panthers forward Scottie Upshall how he felt about his former teammate getting an invite to camp. Here’s what he had to say:
“Shane is very happy to have the opportunity to come to Panthers camp and push to make the team. He’s had a really good summer training and is in the best shape of his career. He’s a proven NHL defenseman who is tough to play against and will be a great addition to our d core at camp this season.” -Scottie Upshall
O’Brien spent parts of last season with both the Calgary Flames and their minor league affiliate the Abbotsford Heat. With the Flames he posted 3 assists in 45 games and with the Heat he put up 3 goals and 5 assists in 31 games. His best year was during the 2011-2012 season as he posted 3 goals and 17 assists in 76 games for the Colorado Avalanche. During that same year he logged 105 penalty minutes and 138 hits showing his physical prowess. Check out his career stats here.
I’m assuming he has been invited to camp to challenge Dylan Olsen for one of the last spots on the blue-line or to simply add depth to the back-end. If he does earn a contract with the Panthers he will make us much tougher to play against.
