Today General Manager Dale Tallon announced that the team has decided to buyout the remainder of Captain Ed Jovanovski’s contract. Jovo will still make $2.7 million this year because players who are bought-out are entitled to two thirds of their contract total according to the new CBA. With the buyout the Panthers have roughly $32 million to spend on free agents come Tuesday and on resigning key players such as Erik Gudbranson, Jimmy Hayes, and Dmitry Kulikov.
This move most likely signals the end of Jovanovski’s long 18 year career which started with the Cats back in 1994 when we took him with the first overall selection in the draft. Throughout his career he spent time with the Vancouver Canucks and Phoenix Coyotes as well. Jovo returned last year after having his hip resurfaced making him the first pro-athlete ever to return and play after having that surgery.
With Jovo gone the Panthers are once again without a captain. Could Brian Campbell or the young Erik Gudbranson get the label? Only time will tell and come next season our defense with have many different faces.
