When you don’t have the talent other teams have, you are going to have to outwork them in order to win. Through the second and third periods, the Florida Panthers outworked the Dallas Stars – who are currently fighting for their playoff lives.
With nothing left to lose, the Panthers did their best to spoil those chances, as the Stars missed out on an opportunity to get a step up on their competition – the Phoenix Coyotes.
After falling behind 2-0 on two goals that opened the first and second periods, the Panthers fought back with goals by Scottie Upshall and Brandon Pirri that tied the game going into intermission.
The Upshall goal was set up by some excellent fore checking and even better work along the boards. Highlighting the hard work was Jesse Winchester, whose work along the boards was led to the Panthers being able to hold the puck in the zone
Pirri got the secondary assist on the goal, extending his point streak to four games. He would later tie the game with an one-timer from the slot, Jimmy Hayes passing him the puck.
With less than five minutes, Sean Bergenheim redirected a Colby Robak shot to give the Panthers the lead. Goaltender Roberto Luongo sealed the deal with a couple of brilliant saves late in the game, making 35-in total to win in his second game back after missing three.
Finally back in the win column, the Panthers will look to finish their last three games with the same success. They will play the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, looking to win consecutive games for the first time since January 19-20 against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres.
