The Florida Panthers have recalled forwards Quinton Howden and Alex Petrovic from the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League. The move was announced earlier today by general manager Dale Tallon.
Howden, 22, was one of three first round picks for the Panthers in 2010 – along with Erik Gudbranson and Nick Bjugstad. In 57-games this season in the AHL with San Antonio, Howden has registered 27-points (10 G, 17 A).
I began to wonder if/when the Panthers were going to give Howden a shot. I am a big proponent of getting your younger players as much playing time this late in the season, especially when there isn’t much on the line.
With a great blend of size and speed, Howden is perfect player to fill out the bottom-six for the rest of the season and then ease into a top-six role next season. In his 18-career NHL games Howden has yet to register a point.
I talked about Petrovic yesterday, and thought it was weird that they would call up Mike Mottau instead of Petrovic. Mottau was sent back to San Antonio and Petrovic will be replacing him in the lineup.
Petrovic has 13-points (2 G, 11 A) in 43-games this season with the Rampage. He had a brief five game stint with the Panthers earlier this season and in 11-career games at the NHL level, he has yet to register a point.
