Florida Panthers: Deadline a win for Dale Tallon

The NHL Trade Deadline has taken on a life of its own, to the point where we might as well recognize it as a North American holiday. The Florida Panthers made the most out of the holiday, being one of the more active teams in the two days leading up and of the day itself.

After already adding center Brandon Pirri from the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as trading Mike Weaver, the Panthers went big and traded for Roberto Luongo – bringing him back to the Sunshine State.

Deadline day saw the Panthers make two more moves, trading away two veteran players and bringing in a veteran goalie and two draft picks in the process.

In a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Panthers sent 30-year old center Marcel Goc to Pittsburgh for two draft picks – a fifth round pick in this upcoming draft and a third round pick in the following years draft.

In 62-games this season, Goc has scored 23-points (11G, 12 A) good for tenth on the team.

One last move for the Panthers was a move that was a trickledown effect from the Luongo trade. With Luongo coming back to town, questions immidietly arose on whether or not both he and Tim Thomas could co-exist.

They have a history going back to when they met each other in the Stanley Cup Final, and in the end Thomas was moved to the Dallas Stars for backup goaltender Dan Ellis.

Ellis, 33, has played in 14-games this season and has posted a 3.04 goals against average and a .900 SP%. Over his career he has played in 198-games and has a career GAA of 2.75 (.908 SP%).

The Panthers got better without really giving away any real assets. A look at the players and picks that have come and gone during the deadline period,

Players Received

Players Traded

Pittsburgh 2014 5th Round Pick

2014 3rd Round Pick

Pittsburgh 2015 3rd Round Pick

2016 5th Round Pick

Montreal 2015 5th Round Pick

Tim Thomas

Roberto Luongo

Jacob Markstrom

Dan Ellis

Marcel Goc

Brandon Pirri

Shawn Matthias

Steven Anthony

Mike Weaver

The picks that the Panthers traded to get Pirri were replenished when they moved Goc to Pittsburgh. They traded Thomas and Jacob Markstrom and got two goaltenders in return. Even Pirri and Matthias share similarities as young offensive minded forwards in need of a change.

All-in-all the Panthers were able to come out with the best player (rare for a team at the deadline projected to finish at the bottom of the standings) and in the end didn’t have to give up too much.

Score one for Dale Tallon and his staff – now if he could get that stud young defender to build his defensive group around or get one of his current players to take that next step up.
