The Rat Trick: Morning Links 2/3/2014

Florida Panthers

Russell LaBounty-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to The Rat Trick’s morning links, where you can get your taste of what’s going on around the league.

The Florida Panthers are off today, with a game upcoming against the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday. They will look to rebound after their 4-1 loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Carolina Hurricanes get their franchise goalie back, as they recalled Cam Ward from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League from his conditioning assignment.

Growing up a hockey fan, I have seen a lot of coaches come and go but one name that lingers – and lingers around winning teams is Ken Hitchcock. NHL.com’s ‘Sunday Long Read’ chronicles Hitchcock’s career.

A good piece on Octopus Thrower, and the dilemma the Detroit Red Wings are facing with their star center Pavel Datsyuk. Datsyuk has been out since the Winter Classic and it has been leading some to believe whether or not it could have something to do with him wanting to rest for the upcoming Olympics in Sochi.

Speaking of the Red Wings, they played a wild game on NBC yesterday against the Washington Capitals, where they eventually lost in overtime on Alex Ovechkin’s 39th goal of the season. The game recap here by Peter Fish.

A little news on the Panthers’ front. With the continued rise of the KHL, the threat of losing Russian born players now is even more prevelant – especially due to the Ilya Kovalchuk situation. Fortunately for the Panthers, according to Pro Hockey Talk they won’t have to worry about that with Dmitri Kulikov – who has denied reports of him wanting to return to his homeland to play.
