Florida Panthers 17-21-6, 40 pts (7th in Atlantic) at New Jersey Devils 18-18-9, 45 pts (6th in Metro)
The Florida Panthers will look to wrap up their three game road trip with a win tonight when they take on the New Jersey Devils at 7:00 p.m. ET.
The Panthers have split the first two games of their current road trip. They lost 2-1 in Montreal on Monday but bounced back with a 2-1 shootout victory against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. The Panthers are 2-1 through the first three games of the new year.
Jump-starting their sluggish offense will be a key tonight for the Panthers. The team followed a five goal outburst against Nashville last Saturday with one-goal performances against Montreal and Buffalo. If the Panthers are going to put some pucks in the net, they will have to beat Corey Schneider who will be getting the start for the Devils. Schneider has been solid this season compiling a 6-9-5 record, a .918 Sv% and a 2.02 GAA. He made 26 saves in a 1-0 shutout win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
Tonight will be the first of three match-ups between the Panthers and Devils. The two teams have a history dating back to the first round of the 2011-12 playoffs where the Devils dispatched the Panthers in seven games. There are a lot of new faces on each team as both teams are led in scoring by players who did not participate in the 11-12 playoffs. The Panthers are led by 18-year-old rookie Aleksander Barkov who has tallied 22 points so far (7-15-22) while the Devils are led by the salty ageless veteran, 41-year-old Jaromir Jagr who has put up 35 points in his first season with the Devils (13-22-35). Both Jagr (Czech Republic) and Barkov (Finland) will be heading to the Sochi Olympics, Jagr for the fifth time and Barkov for the first.
