Quick Take:

I love the Vancouver Canucks, wow that feels good to get off my chest. Sometimes I think of the Vancouver Canucks as Panthers-Northwest. For some reason, it seems like so many ex-Panthers find their way to Vancouver. Do a quick scan of the lineup and you will see familiar names such as David Booth, Chris Higgins, Mike Santorelli, Jason Garrison and Roberto Luongo. All of these guys either A) excelled with Florida to a point where they were un-resignable for the small market Panthers (Booth, Garrison, Luongo) or B) they were players the Panthers did not see as part of their future and were given away for next to nothing (Higgins, Santorelli).

It seems crazy but Mike Santorelli is the Canucks fourth leading scorer behind the Sedin brothers and Ryan Kesler. Santorelli’s 12 points (five goals, seven assists) would put him in a tie with Tomas Fleischmann for the Panthers’ scoring lead. Last season the Winnipeg Jets claimed Santorelli after the Panthers put him on waivers. He has become a top-six forward for Vancouver after signing with them in the offseason.

It will be fun to see some old faces but it will be a bummer at the same time. The Panthers are like the guy who never did anything with his life and has to go to his 25 year high school reunion and listen to his old friend that he used to occasionally lock in dumpsters, talk about the millions he made creating computer software and all the beautiful girls he has met along the way. Of course, this metaphor falls apart when you try to factor in David Booth’s struggles, the fact that this version of the Canucks (i.e. Sedins/Luongo) never won a Stanley Cup, and the whole weird Roberto Luongo goalie purgatory ordeal. Maybe the computer tech guy has had like three failed marriages and is paying child support for like nine different kids with the three women and he also has a sex addiction or something. And then you, (the Panthers) the guy who is still tending bar at the neighborhood spot, spend some time with this guy at the reunion and you realize how stressed and unhappy he is and you start to think that maybe the quaint operation you have going at the local bar is not so bad after all….or something like that….uh..Prediction: Panthers win 4-2!!
