Florida Panthers Morning Nips: 11/4/13

November has begun and for hockey fans of struggling teams the new month means facing down the hard truth that their teams will most likely miss the playoffs. It seems crazy to rule out the playoffs so early, I mean with more than 65 games left anything could happen, right? Unfortunately, history says otherwise.

From 05-06 to 11-12 only three of the 32 teams who were four points or more out of the playoffs on November 1st recovered to qualify, according to Elliotte Friedman. The Florida Panthers as of November 1st were eight points behind the final playoff position. Currently they are only seven points out. Its not much fun, as a fan, to give up hope for your team after only one month so just for sanities sake I advise holding onto hope and ignoring the numbers. I mean according Sports Club Stats, the Panthers have a 4.7 percent change of making the playoffs. SO YOU’RE TELLIN ME THERE’S A CHANCE!

Here is the latest from King’s Landing:

  • While we are on the subject of dashing playoff dreams, here is Sean McIndoe’s look at the eight teams that fall in the four-plus-point-deficit category. McIndoe’s Panther prediction? “The Panthers improve enough to stay on the outer fringes of the playoff race into the new year, then have to decide whether to hold a fire sale. They do.” Well said.
  • The San Antonio Rampage picked up a 5-3 win at home Saturday against the Charlotte Checkers. The Rampage fired 43 shots at the Checkers goalie who was none other than Rick DiPietro. Vincent Trocheck added two assists in the game to bring his team leading point total to 11 (six goals, five assists). San Antonio next plays two on the road against the Abbotsford Heat tomorrow night and Wednesday night.
  • Please do yourself a favor and follow Krys Barch on twitter. During the offseason I wrote about which Panthers has the best twitter account. I handed to title to Panthers goaltender Jacob Markstrom but that was before Barch entered the picture. Barch does not tweet that often but when he does he speaks his mind. Here is a sample:

  • Speaking of Krys Barch, here he is pulling out a tooth in the penalty box on Saturday night at the Verizon Center:

“The Panthers have played in the fifth-most shootout games all-time (93) yet only five teams have fewer wins (34) and no team has more losses (59). Columbus, ranked 29th in the league, has nine fewer losses than the dead-last Panthers.”
