Every Monday or Tuesday, The Rat Trick will be bringing you the Florida Panthers’ three stars of the week. These are the players that impressed us the most over the previous seven days.

Last week was characteristically an up-and-down week for the Panthers, well, mostly down with a tiny bit of up at the end. Florida went 1-3 last week. They started things off on Sunday by getting shutout 3-0 at home to the L.A. Kings. Two close losses followed to the Predators and Bruins before Florida finally picked up a 2-1 shootout win Saturday over the Wild. Here is a look at the Panthers’ three stars for the week that was:

Third Star: Matt Gilroy

Matt Gilroy started the season as a healthy scratch. After sitting out the first four games of the season, Gilroy finally cracked the lineup on Friday, October 11th against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He replaced veteran Ryan Whitney and has not looked back since.

Gilroy has been an offensive plus since joining the lineup. His speed and instincts have allowed him to jump up into the play putting added pressure on opposing defenses. Gilroy insertion into the lineup seems to have influenced the rest of the Panthers defensive corps as the unit has had an offensive swagger that we did not see at the start of the season.

All that offensive pressure paid off on Tuesday when Gilroy scored against the Nashville Predators. It was the first goal by a Panthers defenseman this season. Gilroy finished the week with the one goal, five shots, and a -1 rating.

His defensive play left something to be desired but we will look past that for now as Matt Gilroy is our third star of the week.
