Believe it or not, there is a hockey game being played in South Florida tonight. You’re excused for thinking that the BB&T Center is hosting a cage match between former-Bruin-now-Panther-goaltender Tim Thomas and current-Bruin-goaltender Tuukka Rask. Throw in a little bit of Zdeno Chara with a steel chair on the side and you’ve got yourself a night.
For the next 24-hours, the all consuming story in the hockey world will be former Florida Panthers Gregory Campbell and Dennis Seidenberg returning to South Florida to take on their old team….wait…I think I got that wrong….the all consuming story in the hockey world will be former Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas facing his old team for the first time since he left them with one year remaining on his contract prior to the 12-13 season.
Like it or not, tonight’s game will take a backseat to the Thomas/Bruins hoopla but fear not, things will be back to normal on Saturday when the Minnesota Wild come to town and the national hockey media pack up their tents and leave town in search of the next big thing. Anyway, here is the latest from the Panther-verse:
- Tim Thomas will be playing against the Bruins tonight, this according to the Panthers twitter feed, not head coach Kevin Dineen who does not discuss his starting goalies prior to games. (Miami Herald)
- Aleksander Barkov has been a bright spot so far for the Panthers. (Panthers.com) The judges submitted their results from Jones-Barkov I and so far the matchup is too close to call. Its too bad Jones and MacKinnon play in the West and the Lightning sent Jonathan Drouin back to juniors. Those top draft pick match-ups are fun but they will seldom occur this season.
- Tim Thomas is avoiding the press in the lead up to tonight’s game. (Sun-Sentinel) Much to the dismay of the many out there hoping to get something from the quotable Thomas, he will not speak with the media until the post-game tonight.
- In other NHL news, there is an interesting rumor bouncing around that Nail Yakupov may be a trade target as the season moves forward. (Blackhawk Up)
