Florida Panthers Morning Nips: San Antonio Tonight, Cuts On The Way

The Florida Panthers will take on the Dallas Stars tonight as the pre-season continues. The game will be held in San Antonio at the AT&T Center, the home of the Panthers’ AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. The game will be the fourth game of the pre-season for the Panthers who have gone 2-0-1 in their first three games. Here is the latest on the Florida Panthers:

  • According to Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel, Michael Houser will get the start tonight against the Stars. Jacob Markstrom will be back in the net Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Tim Thomas could make his pre-season debut Thursday when the Cats take on the Lightning in Estero, Florida.
  • The Panthers will be cutting between 20 and 24 players following tonight’s game. Those players will remain in San Antonio to take part in the Rampage’s training camp. The cuts will bring the Panthers roster down to about 35 players. With more cuts on the horizon, the competition for the last few roster spots will really start heating up in the coming week. Here is head coach Kevin Dineen on tonight’s cuts:

It’s going to be a really tough cut. It’s going to be some hard conversations between myself and Dale because I’m trying to be merciless to have a workable, manageable number. Yet for some guys, the decision haven’t been made.

  • Scott Clemmensen, who remained in Coral Springs during the team’s current road trip, is back skating and could skate with the team when they return to practice on Monday, reports George Richards of the Miami Herald. Sean Bergenheim (abdominal) and Nick Bjugstad (concussion) also stayed in South Florida.
  • Lastly, I introduced the Florida Panthers mailbag last month and while the response has been promising, we could still do a lot better. I will stress again, feel free to send me questions about ANYTHING, Panther related or otherwise. You can email me your questions at [email protected] or send them our way on Twitter or Facebook.
