Tim Thomas To Join Florida Panthers On PTO?

After days of rumors regarding which veteran goaltender the Panthers would bring into training camp, it appears it will be ex-Bruins star Tim Thomas who joins the squad. The Panthers invited Thomas to camp for a professional try-out (PTO) last Tuesday, September 10th and reports are; he has finally accepted the offer and could arrive in Florida as soon as today.

This is according to hockey insider Bob McKenzie who unleashed the following tweets at around 9:30 this morning:

So there you have it. With this news, the Panthers training camp just got a hell of a lot more interesting. If he does in fact join the Panthers, Thomas will be joined by a contingent of media coverage that usually would not be within sniffing distance of a Florida Panthers anything.

Thomas, who took all of last season off, last played in 2011-12 with the Boston Bruins. During that season, the two time Vezina trophy winner played in 59 games notching 35 wins while posting a 2.36 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.

The big question surrounding Thomas if he shows up at Panthers training camp is, will he be able to fight off the effects of age and idleness to claim a spot on the Panthers roster?

With the 23 year old Jacob Markstrom looking like the favorite to grab the starting goaltender role, Thomas may have to fill the backup position something that may be a point of contention for the veteran. According to his agent, Markus Lehto, Thomas wants to start. When asked about Thomas’ desire to be a number one goaltender, Panthers GM Dale Tallon responded:

Well I certainly don’t want to sign a goalie that says he wants to be a backup. I want somebody that wants to be the guy.
