Ahh August 22nd what a great day. You know what I like about August 22nd? I like that its not August 21st, which means we are one day closer to the end of this god-forsaken month. In a few short weeks, when the drama of training camps begin, when the news will be flowing like sweet Franzia straight from the box, we will look back on these last days of August and we will be unable to recall the feelings of utter hopelessness that hung over our heads, we won’t be able to recreate the tedium and utter boredom that constantly harangued our every waking moment like a slowly degrading hip. We will look back on the last weeks of August and convince ourselves that it wasn’t so bad and we will unthinkingly file it away in the back of our brains until next year when August comes again like a nightmare intruding on a peaceful reverie.
I apologize for the hyperbole. August is actually quite a lovely month. The days melt away like a creamsicle in the sun, beautiful weather abounds, and the outside world yearns for you to come bask in its warmth, but from a purely hockey fans standpoint August sucks. With that being said lets take a look at some links from around the web:
- Shameless self promotion alert: Here is The Rat Trick’s latest Panthers’ roster projection. Also if you did not already catch it, here is the latest in our Offseason Outlook series, this one focusing on Sean Bergenheim.
- Speaking of Bergenheim, here is an update on his injury situation, courtesy of George Richards and the Miami Herald. The injury situations of Drew Shore, Ed Jovanovski, Kris Versteeg and Dmitry Kulikov are also touched on.
- In case you missed it, here is the NHL’s coverage of the Panthers as part of their 30 in 30 series.
- Not much going on in the hockey world, as consolation, here is my top read of the week: Zach Lowe, over at Grantland.com, did a wonderful job fighting through the NBA’s august tedium with this definitive guide to the best and worst NBA team names. As you would suspect, a list such as this generates some passionate responses from slighted fan bases. It also makes me think of what an NHL version of this would look like….
