Happy Wednesday Panther fans! I hope you are all spending your time wisely, as in making plans for the Fourth of July while pretending to be productive at work. For those of you who need a break from all that procrastinating, you are in luck, because there is plenty happening around the Panthers-verse. Here is a look at all the latest Panthers news and rumors.
- The Panthers began the process of re-signing their restricted free agents yesterday, extending qualifying offers to six players. Shawn Matthias, Jacob Markstrom, Colby Robak, Michael Caruso, Jon Rheault and Scott Timmins were the six players to receive offers. RFA’s Peter Mueller and Jack Skille did not receive offers. GM Dale Tallon indicated that the Panthers are still interested in re-signing Mueller if the price is right, but Jack Skille will not be re-signed.
- The Panthers are still “holding out hope” that they can get a deal done to bring back UFA Stephen Weiss. While a deal probably won’t get done before the start of free agency on Friday, it is a good sign that the desire is there from the Panthers. Ultimately I do not think Weiss will be back with the team but I have been wrong before so who knows.
- The Miami Herald’s George Richards tweeted the following:
Dale Tallon: #FlaPanthers probably won’t be active when FA market opens Friday; not going to overpay for players. Will make deals in Aug

This probably is a bit disappointing to hear but realistically speaking it is probably the best strategy for the Panthers to take. Let’s call this the not-getting-too-drunk-too-early-in-the-party-so-at-the-end-of-the-night-you-can-pick-up-one-of-the-pretty-girls-who-hasn’t-yet-found-a-match-strategy.
- If the Panthers do in fact take a quiet approach to the start of free agency, that would probably mean they will not be too involved with either Vincent Lecavalier or Ilya Bryzgalov. (Especially since Lecavalier has already agreed to a deal with the Flyers)
