Florida Panthers Competing In World Championships

The 2013 IIHF World Championships will be taking place May 3-19 and there will be a number of Florida Panthers participating in the tournament. The following players will be reprinting their countries when the puck drops on Friday: F Nick Bjugstad (USA), D Brian Campbell (Canada), F Marcel Goc (Germany), F Tomas Fleischman(Czech Republic), F Tomas Kopecky (Slovakia), and G Jacob Markstrom (Sweden).

Bjugstad joins a US team that is predominantly made up of young unproven players led by veterans Matt Carle and Paul Stastney. Team USA will be coached by  Joe Sacco the recently fired head coach of the Colorado Avalanche.

Brian Campbell joins a stacked Canadian team with a roster that reads like a who’s who of NHL stars. Campbell joins Steven Stamkos, Taylor Hall, Jordan Staal, Eric Staal, Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds, Mike Smith, Jordan Eberle and Jeff Skinner amongst many others. Lindy Ruff will be the man charged with the behind the bench duties.

Russia comes in as the defending champions having defeated Slovakia 6-2 in the gold medal game last year. Ilya Kovalchuck, Artyom Anisimov and Ilya Bryzgalov highlight the squad for Russia this year.

The tournament which is being held in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland kicks off tomorrow with a four game slate highlighted by match ups of Germany vs Finland, and Sweden vs Switzerland. USA begins play Saturday against Austria as does Canada who faces Denmark.
