Jerred Smithson Traded To Edmonton, Santorelli To Jets

And so it begins…

The Florida Panthers have traded Jerred Smithson to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2013 NHL draft. Smithson has recorded three goals and two assists this year for the Panthers. Strong in the face off circle and a steady defensive forward, Smithson spent most of the year centering the Panthers fourth line. The Panthers acquired Smithson at last seasons trade deadline for a 2012 6th round pick so overall Florida has gotten good value from him.

In other Panther deadline news, Mike Santorelli has been claimed off waivers by the Winnipeg Jets. Santorelli has disappointed since setting the bar high with a 20 goal season in 2010-11. This season Santorelli has recorded scored two goals and one assist while struggling for playing time even spending some time in the minors.

Finally, according to Renaud Lavoie, the Panthers will not trade Brian Campbell at the deadline.

Alright, we are certainly underway. Smithson and Santorelli both were not huge contributors this year but regardless they still occupied two roster spots on a daily basis for the Panthers. It will be interesting to see who the Panthers call up to replace their spots on the roster. One player to keep an eye on is Nick Bjugstad. Having finished his collegiate season with Minnesota there is a possibility that he will sign with Florida and play out the remainder of the season in the NHL.

The moves figure to keep coming throughout the rest of the day and we will be sure to keep the updates coming.
