Florida Panthers Trade Deadline Buzz

Today is the big day. The NHL Trade Deadline is finally upon us and as we get closer to the 3 pm ET deadline you can expect the madness to pick up. Many of the big expected moves have already been made with Jarome Iginla heading to the Penguins and Jaromir Jagr heading to the Bruins. The St. Louis Blues picked up a pair of ex-Panther defensemen in Jay Bouwmeester and Jordan Leopold while the Rangers made a splash trading for Ryan Clowe previously of the San Jose Sharks.

Today could go an infinite number of ways but the biggest names on the move could be a pair of goalies. Trade rumors involving Canucks keeper and ex-Panther Roberto Luongo have been ubiquitous since the end of last season. The two teams that have come up the most in the rumors have been the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers. I don’t think the Florida Panthers even think about trading for Luongo now that Jacob Markstrom is playing as well as he is.

The Maple Leafs on the other hand have been popping up in rumors for the other big goalie on the trading block Miikka Kiprusoff of the Calgary Flames. The Flames have decided to blow their team up and after already having moved Iginla and Bouwmeester, a deal to jettison Kiprusoff could be inevitable.

So where do the Panthers stand in all of this? Florida unfortunately has seen many of their possible trade chips go down with injuries. Players like Stephen Weiss and Kris Versteeg who likely would have garnered interest from other teams are now out for the year and off the market.

The buzz surrounding the Panthers as we approach the deadline has been surprisingly quiet leading me to believe that Florida is unlikely to make any drastic moves. Last week Brian Campbell‘s name made the rounds but I believe he is unlikely to be moved. Tomas Fleischmann was another Panther whose name has been floating around. There is a much better chance that we see a deal involving Fleischmann than one involving Campbell. Flash’s 24 points are good for second on the Panthers and his skill alone is enough to convince a contending team to make an offer.

Just today Dmitry Kulikov‘s name has appeared in the rumors. The report states that Florida will listen to offers but obviously will require are large return haul for the 22 year old defender.

This close to the deadline, it seems like just about every player is involved in some rumor or another so it
