Here is some Florida Panthers news and tid-bits to get your afternoon cooking:
- The Panthers face off against the New York Rangers. It is the first of three meetings between the teams this year. The teams play each other two more times during April. You can read the game preview here.
- Eric Selleck had quite the night Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes. He played his first NHL game, got in his first NHL fight and earned his first NHL suspension. Selleck has been suspended two games because he left his team’s bench with the sole purpose of starting a fight. Oh by the way, Selleck got pummeled in the fight against Kevin Westgarth. After reading this article about Derek Boogaard and the decrepit state of his brain which resulted from all of his fights throughout his hockey career, I cringe every time I see a fight. Its true, knowing more about the damage that NHL fights incur on the human brain squashes any and all excitement that used to come from watching them. Seeing Selleck take those heavy shots the the head and watching the way he wobbled off the ice in a disoriented haze made me sad more than anything. You can watch the video and form your own opinions here.
- Ed Jovanovski may be done for the season and possibly his career. The Panther captain has only managed six games this season and cannot seem to escape the injury bug. At this point in his career Jovo may decide to hang up the skates.
- I recently wrote about whether or not the Panthers should trade Brian Campbell. I talked about how the argument can be made that Campbell is a bad fit for what this Panther team needs now. Los Angeles Kings head coach Darryl Sutter echoed that argument when he talked about his defenseman Drew Doughty. Referring to not wanting Doughty to try to do everything himself, Sutter said, “Well, if you do that all the time, you’re not a very good player. You’re Brian Campbell in Florida. You’ll be minus-20. And we’ll see you on the highlights, but you’re on a bad team, and you’re a high-minus player.” Ouch. Damn Darryl talk about kicking em when their down. The Panthers have enough to worry about let alone coaches on the other side of the country taking potshots at their players. Here is the full article.
That’s all I have for now. Enjoy the game tonight and follow us on twitter @fansidedtherat.
