The Panthers and Canadiens played a hard fought defensive game for sixty minutes last night. Neither team could register a goal in regulation so the game headed to overtime. Two minutes and ten seconds into the overtime period, the Montreal Canadiens emerged with the 1-0 victory, with a goal from Rene Bourque off an Alex Galchenyuk assist. Galchenyuk carried the puck towards the Panthers net before being disrupted by Dmitry Kulikov. The puck bounced into the air across the goal face to an open Rene Bourque who batted the puck out of the air and into the back of the net.
Jose Theodore bounced back nicely from his poor performance in the Panthers 5-0 loss to Washington last Saturday, a game in which he was pulled, by making 31 saves on 32 shots. The Panthers were unable to test Carey Price most of the game but when they did get open looks, Price shut the door. Price stopped all 26 shots he faced en route to his first shutout of the season.
The Panthers have now gone to overtime in four of their last five games. During that span they are 1-3-0 with their only victory coming in a shootout against the Flyers. While the overtime losses are frustrating, one point is better than none. Florida has now picked up points in six out of their last seven games going 3-1-3 along the way. Over that span of seven games, Florida has secured 9 out of a possible 14 points.
The Panthers now have 11 points which puts them in a five way tie for lowest in the Eastern Conference. The East continues to be tight as the eighth and final playoff spot is currently occupied by the NY Rangers with a total of 15 points.
The Panthers next game is home against Tampa Bay Lightning. The Game is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Saturday. The Bolts have been struggling of late so hopefully the Panthers can put things together and pick up a W.
