The National Hockey League officially canceled the 2013 Winter Classic on Friday, November 2, 2012 due to the ongoing lockout that has canceled all games to be played through November 30, 2012.
The reason for the cancellation is due to the amount of time it takes to prepare for the big game.
With the amount of tickets sold, between 80-90,000, it made sense for the NHL everything the same. The same venue, date, and teams will play the biggest regular season game of the year in January 2014. The teams are the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs in Michigan Stadium.
Television viewership has been 3.7 million to a high of 4.57 million for the 2011 game between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. It was also the most watched regular season game in 36 years.
