Starving for hockey? Don’t know when you’ll see any again? Wondering how to get through labor day weekend and the next couple of weeks? Mark your calenders beginning today, and running through Thursday September 13th as ESPN Classis replays one of the most exciting hockey tournaments ever, the 1987 Canada Cup. The final three games are being broadcast on TSN, so hopefully NHL Network picks these up, but as of today when I checked, no schedule was listed.
Many consider this to have been one of the best displays of hockey’s finest stars at a time when there was considerable social and political unrest. Six teams that included Canada, the United States, The Soviet Union, Sweden, Finland and Czechoslovakia battled it out with Canada winning it all with under two minutes remaining in the final game.
While the U.S. was undefeated, their 3 ties didn’t help them in the round robin placing. With players like Joe Mullen, Phil Housely, Gary Suter (Ryan’s uncle), Chris Chelios, and Pat LaFontaine this team that was coached by Bob Johnson should have faired better.
However the team from Canada was built with some amazing superstars who performed at every opportunity. Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Dale Hawerchuk, Mark Messier, Raymond Bourque, Ron Hextall, and yes the Panthers current head coach, Kevin Dineen. The team was led by a very young and determined Mike Keenan. This team was skilled, worked hard, and played with some snarl, How much snarl? Take a look at this.
If you don’t remember how the final game was won, you can watch the video below. I won’t spoil any of the details for you in case you forgot, or want to be surprised. Nonetheless, watching these epic games should satisfy your thirst for at least a few days.
