Earlier today SI.com came out with their grades for the NHL’s Eastern Conference, giving out ratings for how the teams have faired during the summer. Surprisingly only two A’s were given out as the Washington Capitals received an A minus, as did the Carolina Hurricanes. Surely the Canes signing of Alexander Semin had everything to do with both of those grades.
The New York Rangers received a B plus, which surprised me with their acquisition of Rick Nash, and a few others. However, their defence is still relatively suspect, so with that need not being addressed I can understand the grade. The Toronto Maple Leafs were deserving of the D that writer Allan Muir gave them. Brian Burke has basically sat on his hands all summer. Or just lost his cell phone.
As for our Florida Panthers, you will find that a C minus is the grade that was given. I won’t spoil the commentary by Allan, as you can read the entire article for yourself. However as of this juncture, I’d have given the Panthers and Dale Tallon an A simply for not trading any top prospects or top line players for Roberto Luongo.
