NHLPA Makes Interesting Counter Proposal: Is It Fehr?

Tuesday the NHLPA, led by Donald Fehr met with the NHL to give their counter offer in the labor negotiations in the hopes to bring the two sides closer, rather than further apart.  It would appear that the players, whose willingness to start the season on time is evident in their offer.  Not that they are willing to take the entire brunt of the owners original offer, concessions were made, and are extremly creative.  In addition, the counter offer seems to have been met with a positive feel, and the NHL is expected to come back with their response today.

Harrison Mooney who writes for Puck Daddy has the details that are available to us for review, and has his take on the offer.  The most interesting side bar about these discussions is the comment from the commish, Gary Bettman:

“It’s clear to me that they didn’t put it together in an hour or two,”

Now we will wait and see how this shakes out.  The players appear willing to give up something, but not everything in order to “save” the season.  The owners can now realize that they must save face and make heads or tails out of this offer, and not come back with something that appears to be a step backwards.  There really is not need to volley this till September 15th.  The players want to play as well as stabalize the situation going forward.  Fehr said so himself in this comment:

“We do believe that the proposal the players made today, once implemented, can produce a stable industry … that can give us a chance to move beyond the recurring labour strife that has plagued the NHL the last two decades,” said Fehr.

An interesting component of the offer is the proposal of trading cap space between teams.  George Malik from Kukla’s Corner views this as a very clever way of bringing the two sides together.

The next meeting is today.  All we can do is hope for the best as we wait.
