If you were a Panther fan who was looking forward to Dale Tallon making a boatload of moves this summer, you might have been disappointed. The year after the famous spending spree that ushered numerous players into a Panthers’ jersey, including Kris Versteeg and Tomas Fleischmann, Tallon and his counterparts scaled back the signings. It’s not a surprise, based on where we wound up in the standings, that Tallon wouldn’t want to rock the boat too much with new players and personalities. The roster has been significantly upgraded already, and there is reason to believe that Tallon is done dealing and wheeling, at least for now.
But perhaps just as likely, maybe he’s not. With forwards like Shane Doan and Alex Semin still on the market, and with many people arguing that the team needs more scoring, maybe Tallon does decide to take a shot on one of them. With a piece like Bobby Ryan available, maybe he decides to explore the possibility of a trade, even though it is unlikely. If a restricted free agent doesn’t sign, like Evander Kane for instance, will Tallon perhaps make a play?
It’s tough to judge at this point, considering all the mixed messages we are getting from Tallon and the rest of the media. Dale has been mum about a potential Luongo trade, and only says that he has other “stokes in the fire” when it comes to other deals being done. Meanwhile, the rumor front has been fairly silent outside of the Luongo speculation. All we can do as fans is guess at this point.
But when the roster is broken down, it perhaps leaves room for one more top six forward. The top line of Fleischmann, Versteeg, and Weiss should stuck around, andd the second line looks to be Huberdeau, Mueller, and maybe Upshall. However, a guy like Semin or Doan could easily slide into Scottie’s slot for a more potent offensive presence. Although maybe that’s just wishful thinking, it makes sense if Dale decides that’s a move that could be made.
My gut says Dale is done, but nothing is set in stone. We could get one more forward, or we could stay put. We’ll be fine either way.
