Stanley Cup Finals-Devils vs Kings-Game 3: Keep The Pace

Wow! 2 games later and the LA Kings are up 2-0 in the series. The team that had one of the lowest total goals all season is just 2 games away from winning the Stanley Cup. It felt like déjà vu Saturday night when LA went up 1-0 to then have New Jersey come back later in the game to tie it up. The game went into another OT and the outcome was the same as Game 1. Jeff Carter took the puck around the back of the net back to the front where it looked like he took a shot without even looking at the net. He shot the puck stick side of Brodeur to close out Game 2.

What does New Jersey have to do differently? The Devils powerplay has been 0 for 6. For a team that dominated the powerplay in the regular season, they’ll have to be better. The Devil’s top players have been rather nonexistent. Ilya Kovalchuk seems like he is back in round 1 when he was nonexistent for most of the games. While Zach Parise has been playing strong, he has yet to score on Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick. When a player takes a shot, go to the net for the rebounds. With lots of players crowding the net, it will be harder for Quick to see a rebound.

What should the LA Kings do to keep the winning streak? Keep taking shots on Brodeur. While he has been playing very well this series, he makes mistakes so take advantage of that. Avoid stupid penalties. LA got a penalty as Matt Greene crosschecked the Devils Carter for really no reason. He was caught up in the moment but you can’t afford to take penalties like that in the Finals. Keep the Devils powerplay weak. Play a good defensive game because New Jersey has had very many opportunities to score. Both goaltenders have played well so it’s about who makes the first mistake and who takes advantage of it first.

By tonight, the LA Kings could be 1 game away from winning the Stanley Cup and sweeping the New Jersey Devils. Who would’ve thought? That’s hockey for you! Enjoy Game 3 which you can watch on the NBC Sports Network starting at 8pm.
