Hockey Weekend Across America Starts Today

The National Hockey League along with corporate sponsor Reebok will begin a nationwide celebration today and throughout the weekend to celebrate the game of hockey for all those involved as well as attract new fans.  Hockey Weekend Across America will be the fifth annual celebration of the game.  This Sunday NBC  Sports Group will provide nine hours of hockey coverage on NBC and NBC Sports Network.  Starting at noon there will be regional coverage of  three games on NBC, followed by the Boston Bruins visiting the Minnesota Wild at 3:00 P.M, then at 6 P.M. the Montreal Canadiens will host the New Jersey Devils in a game televised in NBC Sports Network.

Tonight the Florida Panthers will be hosting the Washington Capitals in a Southeast division matchup at the Bank Atlantic Center.  All Florida Panther fans are encouraged to wear their sweaters to the game tonight in honor of Wear Your Favorite Jersey Day, and USA Hockey will share events provided to them by fans across North America.  This link details where you can find events, and gives a general overview of the three days.

For all you social media buffs, make sure you are following @NHL and @USAHockey on Twitter for giveaways and use the hash tags #HWAA and #HockeyMeans to join the conversation.  Fans are also encouraged to visit NHL’s Facebook page and USA Hockey’s page to submit photos of themselves and friends for those that were wearing their sweaters today.  On Sunday @NHL will invite fans to tweet what hockey means to them and upload photos on Instagram using the hashtag #HockeyMeans.  Random prizes will be given away to those that participate.  On Sunday in honor of Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day, USA Hockey is asking fans to post stories, photos, or videos of their hockey heroes to its facebook wall to share with everyone.

The NHL Network will be airing a number of special programs as well including a behind the scenes look at an under 16 AAA hockey team that is coached by former NHL player Pat LaFontaine, which will air Sunday at noon.  Following that the network will re-air a special tribute to the life and career of the NHL’s highest scoring American born player titled Mike Modano: American Icon.  Also, NHL network programs NHL on The Fly and NHL Tonight will feature special guests throughout the weekend, sharing their memories and hockey in the United States.

Make sure to also visit NHL.com over the weekend for in depth coverage including features with former players Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull and Brian Leetch.

All in all a great weekend of celebration for this wonderful game, as we head into the most exciting part of the season with teams fighting for playoff spots, and other vying for positioning in the standings.
