With the recent “minor” injury to Dmitry Kulikov that will keep him out of the lineup for potentially six to eight weeks, the Florida Panthers are fortunate enough to have a veteran defenceman in the AHL to call upon. Tyson Strachan is a 27 year old journeyman defenceman who has appeared in 67 NHL games, all with the St. Louis Blues.
It has been a long road to the NHL for the big defenceman who is listed as 6′ 2″ and 215 lbs. Strachan an original draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2003, was drafted in the fifth round, but never signed with the Canes. He attended Ohio State University where he played for four seasons before signing as a free agent with the Blues in 2008 after spending one season in the minors. He spent parts of three seasons with the Blues and was an emergency call up on December 16th 2008, appearing in his first game on December 18th. He picked up his first NHL point, an assist in a game against the Boston Bruins three nights later.
Strachan played a total of 67 games for the Blues accumulating six assists and 82 penalty minutes. He appeared in 30 games in the 2010-2011 season. On July 12th 2011, Tyson was signed to a two way one year deal with the Florida Panthers, and will be appearing in his first game as a Panther tonight. Known for his stay at home defensive style we hope that Tyson can add some physicality to the blue line and clear bodies out of the crease. After he was signed by the Panthers this summer, assistant GM Mike Santos had this to say::
“He’s a big right-handed defenseman, a gritty guy,’’ Panthers assistant GM Mike Santos told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “He plays a physical game but you never have too many right-handed shots. He pretty much took Mike Weaver’s spot when Mike came here last year.
“He’s a defenseman-defenseman, who plays with an edge.’’
At a time when injuries just keep mounting, this is another situation where a player gets a chance at an opportunity to make an impression. While Strachan is older (27), hopefully his lack of NHL playing time isn’t a hindrance. He’s has good size and hopefully will be ready for the rugged game that tonight’s contest promises to be.
Tyson Strachan will wear number 23 for the Florida Panthers.
