In a minor deal announced this evening the Florida Panthers and general manager Dale Tallon have made a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes. A four player deal that sees the Panthers sending two young forwards Evgenii Dadonov and A.J. Jenks to the Carolina Hurricanes for two of their forwards, Jonathan Matsumoto and Mattias Lindstrom.
Matsumoto, a center, was a third round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2006, and spent three years playing for Bowling Green University, and has spend the past five seasons in the AHL playing with Philadelphia and Charlotte. He appeared in 13 games for the Canes last season and had two goals.
Lindstrom a 6′ 4″ 20 year old left wing was a third round pick of the Canes in 2008 and has been playing in Sweden recently. He has two assists and 10 PIMS so far this season with Tingsyrds AIF (Sweden). Hockey’s Future has a review of Lindstrom here.
You’d probably have to say that the Panthers have given up on Dadonov who last season showed signs of promise before breaking his finger last season and missing 20 games. He seemed to have lost something upon his return, which carried through to this season. In 15 games with the Panthers this year he had two goals and one assist and was a minus four.
As for A.J. Jenks who was drafted in the fourth round in 2008, he had yet to appear in the NHL, and was currently playing for the San Antonio Rampage. In 28 games for San Antonio Jenks has no points.
This looks like a minor league deal that helps the Rampage for now, but it’s very possible that Matsumoto, or Lindstrom work their way into the Panthers lineup at some point in the future.
