Midseason MVP Goes To Brian Campbell

Brian Campbell came to the Florida Panthers via trade with the Chicago Blackhawks for Rostislav Olesz. Olesz is currently playing in the minors while Campbell continues to prove his worth as na elite defenseman with crafty offensive skills.

During the 2009-2010 season Brian Campbell was severely injured during a game against the Washington Capitals where Alexander Ovechkin gave Campbell a little cheap shot sending him hard into the boards. Campbell suffered a broken clavicle and a broken rib in which he was expected to miss 7-8 weeks. Despite the injury, Campbell made it back in time for the playoffs and helped Chicago win the Stanley Cup.

Since coming to the Florida Panthers Campbell has certainly not looked back, and hopes to lead the Panthers into the postseason.

Midway through the season, Brian Campbell is currently 2nd in the NHL for defenseman with 33 points, only behind Ottawa Senators Erik Karlsson. He is also currently tied for the lead with Claude Giroux for the most power play points, with 19. If Brian Campbell were to stay at this amazing pace he would end up with 6 goals and 60 assists and tally 66 points which would certainly be a career high.

Not only does Brian Campbell lead the defenseman with points, he also leads the team with Average Time On Ice with 26:21 which is good enough for 4th in the league. He is pretty much in the top 5 in nearly all statistical measures that go along with Time On Ice. He also helps lead the locker room with his experience and hockey knowledge. His high IQ is clearly visible on the ice as he quarterbacks the power play and night in and night out helps contribute the the Florida Panthers success.

Brian Campbell has to the the midseason MVP although all the players on the Flashmob line certainly deserve honorable mention as well as Jason Garrison and Jose Theodore.

For the Florida Panthers to continue playing as sharp as they have been, Brian Campbell has to continue to lead the Panthers through the 2nd half of the season. The Panthers finished with 48 points halfway through the season. Although to some that may not be what they wanted since they’ve gone 4-4-2 over their last 10 but certainly 48 points halfway through the season and currently leading the Southeast Division is better than any of us could’ve expected.
